FORScan Software Setup and Programming Guide

FORScan is a diagnostic and configuration tool for Ford vehicles. When used with a compatible OBD-II adapter, it allows you to read vehicle modules, save the original As-Built configuration, and enable or adjust supported vehicle features.

This guide explains the complete process—from downloading FORScan to safely disconnecting the programming adapter after your changes are complete. Read this guide in full before attempting any programming procedure.

⚠ Important: FORScan programming changes vehicle module configuration. Police-Lab recommends making one documented change at a time, saving all original files before editing, and maintaining stable vehicle voltage throughout the entire process.

What You Need

Before starting, prepare the following:

FORScan for Windows is the appropriate version for vehicle programming. The mobile FORScan Lite applications for iOS and Android are primarily intended for diagnostics and do not provide the same programming capability.

Before You Begin

  • Make these preparations before connecting to the vehicle:
  • Park the vehicle outdoors or in a properly ventilated area, engage Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • Keep the engine off during normal configuration programming unless the specific procedure says otherwise.
  • Turn the ignition to the ON position so the modules are awake.
  • Connect a battery charger, maintainer, or stable power supply before a prolonged programming session.
  • Ensure the laptop battery is charged, or connect the laptop to AC power.
  • Disable laptop sleep, hibernation, and automatic restart for the session.
  • Remove or disconnect non-essential OBD-II accessories that may share the diagnostic port.
  • Turn off unnecessary electrical loads, including HVAC fan, lights, audio equipment, and other accessories.
  • Do not open or close doors repeatedly during a module write process; doing so may wake additional systems and create voltage or communication interruptions.
  • Never disconnect the adapter, turn off the ignition, close FORScan, allow the laptop to sleep, or start the vehicle while FORScan is actively writing to a module.
  • A stable power supply is critical. FORScan guidance recommends maintaining battery voltage above 11 V during programming, while a charger or dedicated battery support unit is strongly recommended for longer sessions.

Download FORScan

  1. On your Windows laptop, open the official FORScan download page: https://forscan.org/download.html
  2. Download the current FORScan for Windows installer.
  3. Open the downloaded installer and complete the installation using the default settings unless you have a specific reason to change the installation location.
  4. Launch FORScan after installation is complete.

⚠ Important: Use the official FORScan website for downloads and licensing. FORScan’s Windows version is the version intended for configuration programming with an Extended License.

How to Get a FORScan Extended License

An Extended License is required to access FORScan programming and configuration functions. Before choosing a free or paid license, complete the following steps to locate your computer’s Hardware ID.

  1. Open FORScan on the Windows computer you will use for vehicle programming.
  2. Select the About section using the steering wheel icon in the left-side menu.
  3. Locate and copy the displayed Hardware ID.

⚠ Important: Your Extended License is linked to this specific computer. Make sure you request or purchase the license using the same laptop that will be connected to your vehicle.

Option 1: Free Two-Month Extended License
The free Extended License is suitable for first-time users, one-time changes, or occasional DIY programming.

  1. Visit the official FORScan Extended License request page.
  2. Submit the Hardware ID copied from FORScan.
  3. Download the license file once it has been issued.
  4. Return to the About section in FORScan.
  5. Select Load License Key.
  6. Select the downloaded license file and allow FORScan to restart.
  7. Reopen FORScan and confirm that the Extended License is active.

Note: The free Extended License is valid for two months. You may need to request a new temporary license after it expires.

Option 2: Paid Extended License
A paid Extended License is recommended for owners who plan to use FORScan regularly, work on multiple projects, or prefer not to renew a temporary license every two months.

  1. Visit the official FORScan website and purchase an Extended License.
  2. Follow the activation instructions provided after purchase.
  3. Return to the About section in FORScan.
  4. Enter the supplied activation code or select Load License Key, depending on the activation method provided.
  5. Restart FORScan when prompted.
  6. Reopen FORScan and confirm that the Extended License is active.

Note: Keep your purchase confirmation, activation details, and license file in a secure location for future reference.

Choose a Compatible Adapter

Your adapter must support both HS-CAN and MS-CAN communication. Many Ford modules are located on different CAN networks, so an adapter without the necessary support may only detect part of the vehicle.

Police-Lab generally recommends a reliable USB adapter with automatic HS-CAN/MS-CAN switching for Windows programming sessions. A wired connection is typically preferable for configuration writes because it minimizes the risk of connection interruption.

If FORScan detects only a limited number of modules with a manual-switch adapter, check FORScan connection settings and confirm that MS-CAN Support is set to HS/MS Switch. Begin the vehicle scan with the adapter in the HS-CAN position, then follow FORScan’s prompt to change the switch when requested.

Connect to the Vehicle

  1. Locate the vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port, usually underneath the driver-side dashboard.
  2. With the vehicle parked and the ignition off, firmly connect the OBD-II adapter to the diagnostic port.
  3. Connect the adapter to your laptop by USB, Bluetooth, or the applicable connection method.
  4. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine.
  5. Open FORScan.
  6. Select the Connect to Vehicle icon in the left-side menu.
  7. Allow FORScan to identify the vehicle and scan for installed modules.
  8. When prompted, save the vehicle profile. This allows FORScan to recognize the vehicle during future sessions.

Your vehicle may not contain every module listed in online tutorials or spreadsheets. Module availability depends on model year, trim, original equipment, prior repairs, retrofits, and installed hardware.

Understand Modules and As-Built Data

Modern Ford vehicles use multiple electronic control modules. Each module controls a different vehicle system.

Most advanced programming instructions use three pieces of information:

For example, addresses beginning with 720 are generally associated with the IPC, while addresses beginning with 7D0 are generally associated with the APIM. You do not need to memorize these prefixes; always follow the exact module and address listed in the relevant Police-Lab article.

Back Up Your Original Modules

This is the most important step in the entire process.

Before changing anything, save the current As-Built configuration from every module you may edit. These files allow you to restore your vehicle to its original configuration if a change does not work as expected.

  1. In FORScan, select the Configuration and Programming tab, shown by the programming or chip icon.
  2. Review the list of available modules.
  3. Locate each entry labeled As-Built Format.
  4. Select the first module you may need to modify, such as IPC Module Configuration (As-Built Format) or APIM Module Configuration (As-Built Format).
  5. Select the Play button to open the module.
  6. Review the displayed addresses and values.
  7. Select Save All at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Name the file clearly using the module, original status, vehicle, and date. Example: 2020-PIU-IPC-Original-2026-09-06
  9. Select the Stop button to exit the module.
  10. Repeat this process for every As-Built module you may program.
  11. Copy the original backup files to a second location, such as cloud storage, an external drive, or a dedicated folder outside the default FORScan directory.

FORScan typically stores saved configuration files in its Documents folder. Keep an untouched copy of each original backup and avoid overwriting it with later modified versions.

⚠ Important: Special note for IPMB: If a procedure requires changes to the IPMB, manually record the original values before editing. The source tutorial notes that backup and restore behavior for this module may not be reliable.

Understanding a FORScan Code (Critical)

Most Police-Lab DIY Hub articles will provide the required programming information in the format below.

The lowercase x characters mean leave your existing value unchanged.

The uppercase X identifies the exact character that needs to be changed. In this example, the second character in the final group must be changed to 6.

Example:

If your current value at IPC 720-17-01 is:

  • 1234-5678-94AB

and the article instructs you to change:

  • xxxx-xxxx-xXxx to 6

you would change only the uppercase X position. Your new value would be:

  • 1234-5678-96AB

All other characters must remain exactly the same.

⚠ Important: Never copy an entire example value from another vehicle unless the article specifically instructs you to do so. Vehicle configuration values can differ by model year, equipment, module software, and factory configuration.

Understand Checksum Values

Some As-Built rows include checksum characters, usually at the end of the displayed line. A checksum is a validation value calculated from the rest of the configuration data.

  • You do not need to calculate it manually.
  • Change only the exact value identified in the article.
  • Leave all unspecified characters unchanged.
  • Do not manually edit checksum characters unless a specific verified procedure explicitly requires it.
  • If FORScan displays an Incorrect Checksum warning after you change a value, review your edit first.
  • If the edited value and address are correct, FORScan can calculate and write the correct checksum during the programming process.

Make a Configuration Change

Always use the exact module, address, and value format provided in the relevant DIY Hub article.

  1. Open Configuration and Programming in FORScan.
  2. Select the required module in As-Built Format.
  3. Select the Play button to enter the module.
  4. Locate the exact address listed in the article.
  5. Carefully compare the existing value against the required change.
  6. Edit only the required character or characters.
  7. Recheck the module name, address, and each edited character before writing.
  8. If the article requires multiple edits within the same module, complete all listed edits before selecting Write All.
  9. Select Write All.
  10. Read every FORScan warning prompt and confirm only after verifying that the information is correct.
  11. Wait without touching the vehicle, cable, laptop, ignition, or adapter until FORScan confirms the write process is complete.

⚠ Important: Do not make unrelated edits. A single incorrect character can alter a different configuration parameter. Make one documented feature change at a time, complete the verification process, and only then move to the next article or feature.

Cycle the Ignition

After a successful write, FORScan may instruct you to cycle the ignition.

  1. Follow the exact prompt displayed by FORScan.
  2. Turn the ignition off.
  3. Wait for the time specified by FORScan or until the vehicle modules shut down.
  4. Turn the ignition back on without starting the engine, unless FORScan instructs otherwise.
  5. Select OK or continue in FORScan when prompted.
  6. If you made a change to a body-related module, especially the BCM, complete the ignition cycle before attempting additional changes.

Some modules do not apply a new setting until the vehicle has been power-cycled. The BCM in particular should be cycled after changes rather than being programmed repeatedly in one uninterrupted session.

Verify the Result

After the ignition cycle, confirm that the intended feature works correctly.

  • Check the specific vehicle menu, display, lighting function, door function, or infotainment setting described in the article.
  • Verify that no warning messages remain on the instrument cluster.
  • Test the changed feature while the vehicle is safely parked.
  • If the feature does not appear immediately, complete the required restart or reset procedure for that module.
  • For some APIM / SYNC-related changes, an APIM reset may be required before the change becomes visible.

An APIM reset can be performed through FORScan where available, or on many SYNC systems by holding the Power and Seek Forward buttons together for approximately 10 seconds.

Clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes

It is normal for some temporary Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to appear after programming, ignition cycling, or module communication interruptions.

  1. In FORScan, select the DTC tab.
  2. Select Read DTCs to review any active or stored codes.
  3. Confirm that there are no unexpected persistent faults related to the change you made.
  4. Select Clear DTCs to remove temporary programming-related codes.
  5. Re-read DTCs if needed to confirm whether a code returns.

⚠ Important: Do not ignore a warning light or DTC that returns after clearing. If a code persists, stop making further changes, record the module and code, and restore the last known working configuration if appropriate.

Disconnect Properly

Once you have verified the feature and cleared any temporary DTCs, end the session in the correct order.

  1. Exit any open module programming screen using the Stop button.
  2. Return to the main FORScan screen.
  3. Select the vehicle icon in the left-side menu.
  4. Select Disconnect and wait for FORScan to confirm that the vehicle connection has ended.
  5. Close FORScan.
  6. Turn the ignition off.
  7. Wait briefly for the vehicle modules to power down.
  8. Disconnect the OBD-II adapter from the vehicle.
  9. Disconnect the adapter from the laptop, if applicable.
  10. Disconnect the battery charger or maintainer only after the programming session is fully complete.

⚠ Important: Never remove the programming cable while FORScan is writing, scanning, restoring, or otherwise actively communicating with a module. Disconnect the adapter only after FORScan has fully disconnected from the vehicle.

Restore an Original Backup

If a configuration change does not work as expected, restore the saved original As-Built file for the affected module.

  1. Connect to the vehicle and open Configuration and Programming.
  2. Select the affected module in As-Built Format.
  3. Select the Play button.
  4. Select Load All and choose the original backup file for that same module.
  5. Confirm that the module name and backup file match.
  6. Select Write All.
  7. Follow all FORScan prompts, including the required ignition cycle.
  8. Clear temporary DTCs and verify normal vehicle operation.

If you want to temporarily return a vehicle to original programming before service, save a separate copy of your current modified configuration first, such as IPC-Modified, before loading the original backup. This makes it possible to restore your known working configuration later.

Important Safety Notes

  • FORScan changes are performed at the owner’s risk.
  • This guide applies to configuration programming; it is not a guide for PCM tuning, firmware flashing, PATS functions, key programming, odometer-related procedures, or safety-system retrofits.
  • Do not use codes from a different model year, trim level, market, module version, or vehicle platform without verified compatibility.
  • A feature may require physical hardware, supporting modules, correct wiring, calibration, or licensing; a software setting alone cannot add unsupported equipment.
  • Do not program a vehicle with a weak battery, unstable charger, unreliable adapter, loose cable, or low laptop battery.
  • Do not use FORScan while driving.
  • Keep your original backups permanently. They are your fastest recovery option if you need to undo a configuration change.

The most reliable workflow is: backup first, change one documented value, write, cycle ignition, verify the result, clear temporary DTCs, and disconnect properly.
