Unlock Drive Modes on Your 2020–2024 Ford Police Interceptor Utility
Share
If you’ve been wondering how to access additional drive modes like Sport, Eco, Slippery, or Deep Snow/Sand on your Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU), the answer is simpler than most people think. These modes are already built into the system — they’re just not enabled by default.

With a quick adjustment using FORScan, you can unlock these features in minutes, with no wiring or hardware modifications required. This is one of the easiest at-home upgrades you can perform that actually adds real functionality to your vehicle.
What You’ll Need
Before getting started, make sure you have a laptop with FORScan installed and a compatible OBD2 adapter connected to your vehicle. The ignition should be on, and the vehicle safely parked. No physical modifications are needed — everything is done through software.
Step-by-Step: Enabling Drive Modes
Start by opening FORScan and navigating to the Configuration and Programming tab, identified by the chip icon. From there, select the ABS Module Configuration and click the play button to load the data.
Once the module loads, scroll through the list until you locate the drive mode parameters. These typically include:
- SDM – Mode 01 (Normal)
- SDM – Mode 02 (Sport)
- SDM – Mode 03 (Eco)
- SDM – Mode 04 (Slippery)
- SDM – Mode 05 (Deep Snow/Sand)
At this stage, there is one critical setting to change. Find SDM – ABS and switch it from Enabled to Disabled. This step removes the system limitation and allows the additional drive modes to function properly.
After that, go through each drive mode you want to activate and change its status from Disabled to Enabled. You can enable only the ones you need, or all available modes depending on your preference.
Once everything is set, click Write to save the configuration. Confirm the changes when prompted, then turn the ignition off and back on to reset the system.
Using the Drive Modes
After enabling the modes, switching between them is straightforward. There is a dedicated button located just below the small display on the dashboard. Pressing it once will bring up the drive mode menu, and each additional press cycles through the available options.
Depending on what you enabled, you should now see modes such as Normal, Sport, Eco, Slippery, and Deep Snow/Sand appear on your screen.
Real-World Results
We tested this process across multiple PIU configurations, including a 2020 3.3L Hybrid, a 2021 3.3L naturally aspirated model, and a 2023 3.0L EcoBoost. In all cases, the additional drive modes were successfully enabled and functioned exactly as expected.
No wiring, no additional parts, and no hardware upgrades were required — just a simple software change through FORScan.
